James quietly knocked on Mel’s dorm room door. He could see by the tiny sliver beneath the door that the lights were out, but he knew she was up. A moment later, she was out in the hallway with James, using her foot as a stopper.

“What’re you doing here?” Mel asked, not concealing her irritation at all.

James pulled a plate out from behind his back and handed Mel a travel mug, “I brought you Bagel Bites and coffee.”

Mel’s face softened, “Thank you.” She kissed James on the cheek, then started to push the door back open, clumsily balancing her midnight snacks.

“Do you wanna study together in the hallway instead of straining your eyes in the dark?” James offered.

“Actually,” Mel chuckled, “yeah, that would be great,” she handed the Bagel Bites back to James so she could get her stuff from the room.

While he waited, James ate one of them, consequently burning the roof of his mouth.
